Liminal Space – Copa
Liminal Space is a series of painting, oil on canvas, most 30×40”, that draw on my observations of those people I have met who exude an inner joy, a serene composure.
Each painting in the series has a divided canvas, usually vertical, with lines (often gilded) that separate the painting into two or sometimes three sections. For me these areas allow me to visualize with paint what is seen and also what is usually unseen, yet often felt, in daily encounters, either within ourselves or in meeting with another. Seeming to access another world, the people in my paintings appear to breathe in two modes of awareness simultaneously. This intangibility appears in my paintings as fluid and glistening, with colors both subtle and rich. Languid figures, some winged, coexist in parallel places while piercing membranes of perception.
At once modern in symbolic value and ancient in cultural narrative, I see these works as visual riddles. I love dichotomy and how art reveals its satisfying truths. And I invite my viewers to explore their own similar encounters with the duality of inner joy that supersedes the tumult of our outer world.
